Week 14 - Neon Bar sign

Image
It started off being a really slow week, I found it extremely difficult to stay focused on my work and I really felt like I hit a brick wall. I got fed up of all of the assets that were currently in the scene, so even though I wanted to focus on the stuff I had already started, I decided to start something completely different to keep my motivation up. This was the neon bar sign. I found this really helped as it was something that I've never really done before so it was interesting and fun. I found it also made me want to work on the bar itself once it was finished and in engine. The sign itself I modelled in 3Ds Max using splines.  When I brought it into engine, I created a neon material and applied it to the model which gives the effect that the sign is glowing itself. As I was now motivated to finish the bar, I added a foot rest to the stools got it, unwrapped and textured. Overall I am quite pleased with how they turned out, as I made them bright red which really

Week 13- Easter

Our last week of Easter break I decided to stay at home. I wasn't able to get much work done during this week as I had an unfortunate family circumstance occur so I spent most of the time with them. However, when I got a bit of time here and there, I just carried on unwrapping some of the furniture and walls.

week 12 - Easter

Image
The beginning of this week I made a shelving bookcase for underneath the stairs that also has a seating area connected to it. I got inspiration from some images online that I gathered together of bookcases attached to stairs and others with benches. I decided to sort of combine the too different ones together. Below is a small mood board I made: It took me a while to get the size and the shape right but I finally came up with this sort of T-shape that bends round to attach onto the wall. I am going to add some cushions onto the bench and create lots of assets that I can reuse elsewhere for e.g. in the office and on the TV cabinet. Due to family circumstances I had to go home during the middle of this week so this was all I was able to get done. Hopefully I will be able to do some work from home next week.

Week 11 - Easter

Image
So this is the first week of the Easter break, but since I needed to carry on with my FMP I came into the labs as normal. This week I got the TV into engine and I also created a Dcal that is projected onto the DVD player so it looks like it has a digital clock on the front that flashes. I made the font in Photoshop as I couldn't seem to find one online that I liked so I just thought it was easier if I made it myself. Down below is a screenshot of the TV in engine. Also during this week, I started working on some of the smaller details for the kitchen, so for example, getting an oven modelled onto the side of the island, getting some handles on the cupboards and making a sink. As the bar stools were looking very blocky, I added some more geometry to it and added some details around the edge of the seat.

Week 10 - TV texturing

Image
As I mentioned last week that I had started to unwrap my TV, I finished that  on Tuesday, then I brought it into substance painter to create the textures. I reused the wood material that I have on the floor but I made it slightly darker in substance so that it doesn't look too similar. I also used it on the speakers but took the normal map off and changed the roughness to give it some variance. I wanted to add some labels on the DVD player and the PS4 but I don't know if there is any need as I need to keep it simplistic to match GTA, therefore I will leave it for now. In Substance designer I created a link so that i could collapse the different material IDs onto one texture. I had Shane help me with this as it was quite complicated but if I was to do this in the future, I think I could manage now.

week 9 - Cleaning up modular kit

Image
I made a start on making the modular wall pieces that I had into 1 piece for each side instead of having loads of little pieces, as this one something that I was recommended to do in the review week. I found this process very tedious and boring as it was very repetitive. I tried to unwrap the pieces before putting it back into engine. even though I only have a couple of sides done, it is looking far better than the other sides and it has solved my issue of getting a banding effect on the walls. I have also edited the material that I made so that it is a lot more clean and whiter. When I have got all of the walls completed, I think this will match the GTA style a lot better. I also changed the skirting board slightly, as before it was just flat with a little indentation around the edges as it appeared to match what they did in GTA, however I was advised to just make it so that it does actually stick out as that is how a real skirting board would be. I do agree that this looks a

Week 8 - Reviews

Image
This week we had to give presentations to our lecturers on the progress we have made so far on the project. My feedback was  that I have made good progress so far but need to start working on getting some textures in to make it feel like its not so unfinished. I was also told to change the wall modular pieces to just one piece for each side as I was getting a lot of lighting issues when baking. Down below is an example of this: I will take this feedback and turn all of the modular pieces into larger pieces so that there is only 1 block for each wall. I have already started to make a wall texture but it still needs a lot of work doing to it as it doesnt really match the GTA style. I think I need to make it a lot more plain so that it is more of a block colour. It also doesn't help that the walls aren't fixed yet. Here is a screenshot of one of the GTA 5 apartments. As you can see the walls are very clean and minimal, so this is what I shall aim for.
